Filmmaker Philip Chidel gave Fango the word that his literal chiller SUBJECT TWO, which played this past winter’s Sundance Film Festival, has nailed down a couple of big-screen dates. It’ll open April 14 at Chicago’s Landmark Century Centre (2828 N. Clark Street at Diversey) and at Boulder, CO’s Landmark Crossroads Cinema (2985 Pearl Street). “Also, even though it is not public news and the festival hasn’t even occurred yet, SUBJECT TWO was just named Best Feature at the London International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film, which runs April 26-30,” Chidel tells us; the movie plays there Thursday the 27th at 9:30 p.m. and Saturday the 29th at 7:15 p.m. at the Apollo West End Cinemas. Other fests to have played SUBJECT TWO are the Silver Lake Film Festival (where it took the Audience Award), the Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Film and San Francisco Indiefest.
SUBJECT TWO is a modern Frankenstein tale in which Dr. Franklin Vick conducts resurrection experiments on a troubled young medical student named Adam (Christian Oliver) in a cabin high in the snowy Rocky Mountains. Needless to say, said experiments start having unpleasant side effects. “Artistically, the idea of marrying a dark and violent story with such a bright and beautiful world was attractive to me,” Chidel says. “I feel the inherent inability to escape from violence even in the most heavenly environment adds to the story’s dramatic weight. Also, I tried to bring an uncommon emotional core to this psychological thriller’s twisted roots. I hope the end result makes for a haunting and oddly moving viewing experience.” Look for a full article on SUBJECT TWO, which hits DVD June 20 from First Look Home Entertainment, in Fango #254, on sale May 23; you can see the movie’s official website here.
