Variety reports that The Weinstein Company has picked up a trio of genre-centric features from France’s Wild Bunch sales company. One of them is MARTYRS, directed by Pascal Laugier, it’s about a young woman who survived a terrifying ordeal as a child and finds her personal demons arising again in the present day. Look for on-set coverage of MARTYRS in a future issue of Fango.
The Weinsteins grabbed U.S. rights to that film and Agnes Merlet’s DOROTHY MILLS, set in an Irish village where a psychiatrist arrives to analyze a teenaged girl who tried to kill a baby, and appears to possess supernatural abilities. And the company took North American as well as Australia/New Zealand rights to DANTE 01, the return to feature directing by Marc Caro, who helmed DELICATESSEN and THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN with Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The title refers to a space prison where a new inmate arrives bearing a monstrous alien power that foments a rebellion among the inmates. Lambert Wilson from the MATRIX sequels, Dominique Pinon from Caro’s previous features and Francois (CEMETERY MAN) Hadji-Lazaro are among the cast.
