As is the case with most of the films I watch, I’ve never heard of ‘100 Tears’ before I pressed play. I did a little research after finishing it and found out that the star of the movie is also the writer, Joe Davison. I think he did a fine job in both aspects, as he was the best character in the film. He plays a chubby journalist named Mark Webb, who just wants to play video games. He could care less about whatever article he and his overly attractive co-worker, Jennifer Stevenson have to research for the ‘Midnight Star'( a tabloid magazine they work for). However, the two become wrapped up in hunting down the ‘Tear Drop Killer’, who is just a fat man dressed as a clown brutally murdering people.
As soon as you start to watch this film, you know you’re in for a treat. The viewer is introduced to Mark and Jennifer through them bickering about what article they should write. The dialogue is cheesy, but not to the extent that is unbearable. Maybe I just have a poor sense of humor but I actually enjoyed most all of the dialogue in this film, unlike the reviewers on Netflix. What I think most of those viewers are missing is that this is a low budget B-Movie. Are there people out there who expect Academy Award winning screenplays to be associated with a film that centers around a fat killer clown? No, although that would be awesome.
There is nothing wrong with the script or the acting in this movie. Are either great? Of course not, but they are not supposed to be. It is supposed to be silly and charming. This isn’t a film that should be held to high standards and I don’t really understand why anyone would do so. I also liked a few of the other characters in this film. One of the best is the circus midget, Drago. Aside from the awesome name, his character likes to lay in his trailer and look at porn magazines. There is also a scene where Mark is chasing Drago around for information about the Tear Drop Killer which gave me a flashback to Wee-Man being chased around by Preston Lacy in ‘Jackass’. Whether that was Davidson’s intention or not, it was still badass either way.
‘100 Tears’ also graces us with the standard moronic cop characters. They are terrible at their profession, and one of them just wants to sleep with Jennifer. Thus, she is able to sway him to let her and Mark into crime scenes for a cheap $50. Eventually, Mark and Jennifer wind up putting all the pieces together and possibly solving where the Tear Drop Killer is. This is something that if the police spent 3 minutes researching they would have been able to figure out, but they were too busy staring at Jennifer.
This film honestly did hold my attention for the most part. However, the last 15 minutes I felt like the film suffered from A.D.D, it was simply all over the place. The ending took a rewind to understand the events that took place. It ended way too quickly and the pacing was all off. There are a couple of 3 second scenes that end the film that I thought came out of nowhere. I’m not saying that it didn’t make sense, it just was awkward in execution. Also, there were far too many flashbacks and cutscenes during the last 5 minutes. They were out of place and just didn’t need to be there. Combine that with the awkwardness of the last 2 quick scenes and it felt like the ending was incredibly rushed.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Overall, I did enjoy the film though. There is no reason to hold B-Movies to high standards, especially films that include a killer clown. Some of the individuals whom have written reviews about ‘100 Tears’ just simply shouldn’t be watching films like this. There is a very specific audience meant to watch ridiculous films like this one. If you like films like Killjoy, Gingerdead Man, Rabid Grannies etc., you should be able to enjoy this film.
