    Bride of Chucky (1998)

    0
By Phil Davies Brown on August 6, 2003 Reviews

years after the origional ‘Child’s Play’ Director Ronny Yu and writer
Don Mancini bring Chucky back to life, and this time he’s got company in
the form of Chucky’s ex girlfriend Tiffany, who after a little tiff (get
it?) finds herself murdered and her soul transferred into a little bride
    doll.

I remember wanting desperately to see this film at the cinema but
unfortunately due to a campaign by a national newspaper, the film did not
receive a wide release in the UK, and it never made it to the cinemas in
    my city.

When I did eventually see the movie, I was quite disappointed as I didn’t
feel that the humour worked particularly well. Chucky, who had scared me
witless as a child, was no longer scary. Instead he was a wise-cracking
shadow of his former self. It just didn’t sit right with me.

Watching it in preparation for the Director’s next film (Freddy Vs. Jason
as if you didn’t know) I have to say I appreciated it more. I had always
liked the visual nods to other horror characters in the opening sequence
(strangely enough Freddy and Jason are referenced) but must say that the
opening sequence did actually creep me out a little bit this time.

The film has an excellent cast and obviously credit must be given to
Jennifer Tilly as I couldn’t imagine any other actress playing the role
now that I’ve seen her do it. She brings a sense of vulnerability to what
is essentially the role of a murderer. All of the cast have great
chemistry as friends and lovers (I love Katherine Heigl) and John Ritter
and Michael Jhonson are great at playing corrupt cops, but by far the most
entertaining cast member is Gordon Michael Woolvet as David the gay
friend, although Alexis Arquette was very funny as well.

The kills are very inventive and disgusting and the truck scene even beat
Final Destination’s bus scene by two years. Ronny Yu and Don Mancini
succeed at sending the franchise forward in a new direction and I can’t
wait to see how Yu handles Freddy and Jason.

    OVERALL SUMMARY
An exciting movie with plenty thrills and bloody spills. Will provide you
    with lots of laughs.
