I’ve decided that I’m either a sadist or a glutton for punishment lately as I did the unthinkable and watched two Uwe Boll movies in one day, and suffered for it.
To be fair, this most ambitious project is a better made film than House of the Dead but at least you were able to piss yourself laughing at that movie. This one is played dead straight and it is one dull movie.
Christian Slater brings popular video game character Edward Carnby to life in this movie version of the video game series of the same name, and he makes it better than it invariably is.
The film is basically The Relic meets The Cave and is about as good as either of those two previous big beasties in dark places movies.
Most directors have trademarks but Uwe Boll has entire sequences that he must always cram into his movies, so get ready for an opening V.O., aerial shots of ships sailing in water, a dodgy love scene, low rent bullet time and some dodgy wire/effects work backed up by a completely out of place and unwatchable gun fight sequence.
The biggest gripe I have about Uwe’s movies is that there is never any shred of subtlety present. Who in the hell thought it would be good to have Slater and Reid romp to 7 seconds by Neneh Cherry & Youssour N’Dour?
OVERALL SUMMARY
I’m afraid it’s more of the same from Uwe. I’m all for directors having their own style and even including a gimmick in each of their movies such as Sam Raimi and his car, but this is just full of the same mistakes that made House of the Dead a poorly constructed film.
