One of few 80’s slashers that I had never seen before was surprisingly enjoyable if not a little too cheesy, but then it was made in the 80’s so that’s part of the appeal.
Betsy Russell plays popular cheerleader Alison, a girl who has everything, well everything you need in your last year of high school anyway which amounts to friends, popularity and a boyfriend.
Alison has regular freaky nightmares and they seem to be getting worse as her impending stay at Cheerleader Camp seems to be stressing her out.
The kids make it to camp and it isn’t long before they start dying in surprisingly inventive ways, in order of sluttiness of course. Will Alison figure out who the killer is before it’s too late?
Cheerleader Camp is a laugh out loud example of why horror fans love 80’s slashers. Bad hair, bad gags, bad dialogue, overacting and even a corny cheer rap.
The film wasn’t as fast paced as I assumed it would be, but the characters were likeable (the nice ones anyway) and I actually had a hard time deciding who the killer was.
The cast has some recognisable faces and even has a great turn from the late great George ‘Buck’ Flower as Pop.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Cheerleader Camp has a strong cult following and deservedly so as it delivers everything needed in a great 80’s slasher movie.
