This prequel to the 1997 cult hit was well on it’s way to getting a high mark out of five from me, thanks to it’s twisted approach to telling it’s story and the amazingly well executed gory deaths, until it all got a little bit too freaky for my liking.
The story concerns a young man who helps run the cube, as he attempts to save an innocent woman trapped inside the structure.
I really liked the set up of this film, as it concerned the staff helping to run the cube and wasn’t really that bothered with the people trapped inside.
The performances were mostly good, but it was the visual effects that were the strong point here next to the initial story idea.
The film changed paths halfway through though and became a little bit cheesy, when a team of overacting Men in Black types took control and ultimately turned the film into a cheesy escape the mercs kind of sci-fi actioner.
OVERALL SUMMARY
This film deserves credit for taking a very different approach, and for providing viewers with lots of new info about the cube. However, the uneven tone and plethora of new questions raised during the running time, only made me appreciate the original that bit more.
