If youtube has taught us one thing it is that there is always something to watch, something new to be discovered. In between the slapstick videos and hilariously unfunny animals there are some real gems, some productions that deserve a wide audience but that might be missed amongst the maelstrom of banality. Deadly Sins is one such gem from Italian production company Brandon Box.
Written by Andrea Sgaravatti and directed by Guido Geminiani and Mattia Lunardi Deadly Sins asks one basic question; what happens when you die? The story follows theology student Zoe as she attempts to prove her theory of lost souls while investigating the famous Cimitero Monumentale in Milan, a location so hauntingly atmospheric it provides the perfect setting for this original and impactful ghost story.
The first episode shows a young woman visiting the cemetery to attend her mother’s funeral, all of which appears perfect plausible. However when she encounters two strange characters she begins to question her own existence and why she is really there.
Deadly Sins is split over eight episodes to be shown on its youtube channel. I have luckily seen the first two, and am loathe to give too much away, but I was immediately hooked by the interesting and mysterious plot. This is an intentionally ambiguous tale that reveals twists with aplomb and given that each episode is less than ten minutes long it always leaves you wanting more. It is the perfect thing for the bus or train ride home, a little quiet time before going to sleep although be mindful of nightmares, or even to save and watch in one sitting.
There is one problem unfortunately and this is in the dubbing. Foreign productions are so common now that audiences are no longer put off by subtitles but here I feel some of the nuances may be lost in translation.
OVERALL SUMMARY
That said Deadly Sins is a series I will be following and would recommend everyone else does too. There is an honesty and freedom to films and productions made outside the studio system with small budgets that rely on the enthusiasm, commitment and talent of its makers. Once again originality has come from an independent source. Seek out and watch Deadly Sins before your friends do, and then tell them about it!
