This glossy soap style B-movie from director Philip Creager may be a tad heavy handed, but it’s a surprisingly enjoyable and somewhat fresh take on the old cursed object tale.
When Spencer Starkington is jilted at the alter he brutally murders his bride to be and is left in a vegetative state when the police intervene. One of the cops on the scene steals the engagement ring Spencer had given his fiancée and so sets in motion a series of deaths all related to the ring as each time someone wears it, Spencer is brought to life and kills that person in an attempt to get back what’s rightfully his.
This film plays out in similar fashion to The Grudge as its events are presented in non-linear time. It also revolves around a person who (technically) died violently and is forced to repeat his actions. These similarities aside, the film is very different in tone and style but brings together an ensemble of horror veterans such as P.J. Soles (Halloween), Christa Campbell (2001 Maniacs), Iyari Limon (Buffy), Jilon Ghai (Boo) and Ryan Hansen (Friday the 13th) who all encounter the ring at some point and may or may not die as a result.
This is easy on the eye with surprisingly high looking production values for a low budget film and has some decent effects, witty one-liners and fun characters.
OVERALL SUMMARY
It may venture a little too far into daytime TV territory in some respects (just with more boobs) but it’s a surprisingly watchable little flick.
