I checked this out recently at a preview screening and I have to say that with nothing to compare it to (hate piracy) it was an amazing 114 minutes worth of laughs, thrills and bloodshed.
The film follows Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) as he stalks two groups of girls in his death proof car. The first group features DJ Jungle Julia and her posse which includes Shanna (Jordan Ladd) and Arlene a.k.a Butterfly (Vanessa Ferlito). The girls head out to a bar where they meet Mike and he soon sets out to dispatch of them in grisly ways. Fourteen months later, Stuntman Mike sets his sights on another group of girls (played by Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Zoë Bell). This time however, he picked the wrong girls to play with.
The film has so far been tragically misunderstood by audiences (my local multiplex even had a notice up informing patrons that the print was supposed to look old and roughed up!). Tarantino plays with Grindhouse conventions for maximum effect yet no-one seems to have gotten the joke.
The cast is amazing, the performances are wonderful, there’s action-a-plenty, cool tunes and loads more fun stuff to look forward to including the goriest car crash ever committed to celluloid.
OVERALL SUMMARY
I (obviously) would have preferred to have seen Grindhouse in cinemas here, but Tarantino has ensured that his UK fans have enough extra goodies to make it worth your while checking out. I haven’t laughed so hard in months…pure genius!
