This Freddie Francis Hammer horror film has some rather silly filters used
to no effect, but still manages to be one of the best of the Dracula
Series.
Monsignor Rupert Davies and atheist son-in-law Barry Andrews must
work together to save sexy Veronica Carlson from the eeeevil clutches of
Count Dooku…er…Dracula (Christopher Lee).
Excellent lead performers are ably backed up by Barbara Ewing as flirty
barmaid Zena, and Ewan Hooper as the pathetic priest who becomes Dracula’s
whipping boy.
Though given little dialogue, it is still the commanding Lee
who anchors this film, though Andrews is the least wussy of the wussy
Hammer leading men, and the film is worth seeing for one scene alone;
Davies’ hilarious reaction to Andrews’ lack of religious beliefs- it’s the
most amusing reading of ‘I Beg Your Pardon!’ I’ve ever heard. Great James
Bernard score and spooky gothic trappings.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Blood-shot eyes, boobies, atheists, men wearing capes, saucy tarts and a
dorky bald priest- what more do you want?
