This sequel to Dracula 2000 has taken three years to get released here in the UK and I have no idea why, as it’s a great sequel and a decent little movie all on its own.
The film begins with a dreamy opening sequence and then picks up where the first film ended as medical student Luke (Jason London) brings a body that had been found burning upon a cross into the morgue. His colleague Elizabeth begins examining the body and the two soon realize that they have a vampire on the slab. A phone call comes in and the mysterious caller offers them $30,000,000 for the body. The panicked friends ask their tutor for advice, and he tells them to take it to his parents’ derelict house in the woods so that they can study it in an attempt to discover the secret to eternal life. This sets up an interesting story which plays out over 90 minutes of sick set pieces, in what is one of the most fun horror sequels I’ve seen in a good while.
The cast were all familiar faces and were very good here and it was nice to see that the smaller budget had no noticeable effect on the visual effects, as they were still of a very high standard.
The story is pretty good and the script has some great one liners which are well acted by the capable cast.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Dracula II Ascension is a solid follow up to a wonderful reimagining of a classic tale.
