This film comes from director David DeCoteau and whilst his films are never terribly origional or different, this one is actually quite refreshing.
The premise sees rich bitch Kristen plan to get one over on her younger sister’s boyfriend after he rejects her advances, by arranging a murder mystery weekend with her pals, which if handled correctly, will send poor previously traumatised Charlie over the edge.Everything appears to be going to plan…..until a real killer crashes the party.
The film opens strongly with a great opening sequence and quickly covers new ground by opening with a guy in the shower instead of a girl!! After the obligatory phone calls and powercut however it becomes quite routine.
The story is largely based on ‘April Fool’s Day’ and even references ‘Halloween’ and ‘Friday the th’ but surprisingly has an element of ‘Cruel Intentions’ thrown in for good measure.
Director David DeCoteau is known for using the same location and actors in
most of his films but only a few are present here, and whilst that unfortunately includes over-actor Michael Lutz, his sins are more than compensated for by the inclusion of DeCoteau prodigy Bradley Stryker. Erinn Carter is a revelation as she is without a doubt one of the best
bitches I’ve ever seen!
Even more credit must be given to the Director for not skimping on the gore, as the red stuff flows freely in this film, what with violent stabbings, throat slashings and fake guts.
Whilst the girls are severly outnumbered by the guys, most viewers will be
pleased to hear that it is the least homo-erotic of all the recent DeCoteau films, and the revelation of the killer was quite surprising too!
OVERALL SUMMARY
Overall, whilst the film may look like a cheap rip off of ‘Scream’ on the outside, when you actually sit back and watch the film you realise that it in fact owes a lot more to the slasher films of the ‘s.
