This little flick had me eager to see it, thanks to its solid cast and its ‘based on a true story’ element, but it turned out to be possibly one of the worst films of the year.
The story sees drifters picked up by a muck smeared C. Thomas Howell who takes them to his ranch, and keeps them there for slave labour purposes. To paraphrase, ‘As long as you can work you’re safe’ but if you get lippy or hurt your leg and can’t work so quick, then it’s out to the smoke house for you where you’ll be turned into Jerky!
What a piece of shit! I’m sorry, I know this was a true story (allegedly) and it must have been hell for the people who actually went through this, and I can even see the point of telling the story (besides money of course) but why on earth they made such a laughable MOW and thought it was good I’ll never know. Talk about smearing the memory of those involved. Forget World Trade Centre, this has to be 2006’s most controversial exploitation flick, as it portrays everyone in Texas as a hick and all drifters as good for nothing nobodies who are either black, foreign or haunted war veterans. What an insulting piece of trash!
The storytelling techniques are laughable as is most of the acting, and the musical stingers had me hosing myself with laughter, especially the moment when we meet Lois, the evil woman of the house who whips around from the sink to reveal that her facial deformity make-up consists of rice crispies and foundation.
I have quite possibly never been so insulted by a film in all my days. What a racist, exploitative piece of trash. I know shit like this goes on in the world but why make it worse by goofing it up for film and charging punters £3.50 to see it.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Curious horror fans are currently awaiting a US release. There’s a reason this isn’t out there yet and it’s most likely the fact that the wonderful cast have taken out an injunction against the filmmakers for intent to ruin their careers. Absolutely abysmal and shocking, I am seriously offended.
