Despite an excellent cast and crew this latest flick from The Asylum still manages to be bland.
Edward Furlong, Cerina Vincent, Amber Benson and Steve Railsback star in this tale of a group of friends who must travel underground to the Mexican border in order to make a drugs deal. The friends soon discover that the tunnel is known as El Intermedio, or the in between, where restless souls are doomed to roam and torture others. It’s safe to say that the kids start dying in supposedly grisly fashions.
The film benefits hugely from its talented cast, capable director and beautiful photography from the late Neal Fredericks, but aside from some witty quips and a few little camera tricks it’s a pointless romp which sees the cast run around like headless chickens.
Watching the film it feels like the script was so short that they needed to pad things out in order to qualify as a feature, so they keep unnecessary shots in and re-use footage all too freely. It also felt as though most of the action was improvised towards the end, and one sequence in particular which sees Furlong and Vincent have to crawl under a plywood board whilst trying to create the illusion that they are crawling underneath a building, is so utterly ridiculous that you can even hear Cerina Vincent laughing.
Steve Railsback is underused and the rest of the talents are underappreciated as this is definitely not one of those rare indie treats that you find from time to time.
OVERALL SUMMARY
This scores major points for the talent, effort and other subtleties but I wouldn’t be in a huge hurry to watch it again.
