After Jason went to hell, which we could argue was actually just Manhattan in part 8, things were looking bleak for maggot head until the bright sparks behind this entry decided to send him where the Leprechaun before him had gone…..space.
Not really a hit with fans or critics despite making a profit and keeping things warm for the then forthcoming Freddy vs. Jason, Jason X suffers due to the fact that it tried to be different rather than follow suit.
In the not too distant future, Jason and Rowan a scientist who had been studying Jason’s ability to regenerate tissue are cryogenically frozen during a scuffle and are brought back to life 450 years later, when they are discovered by students on a class trip from Earth 2.
Once Jason thaws, things pick up a bit but it’s never really scary, which previous entries managed to be as well as gory and full of nudity.
The female characters are quite likeable but the majority of the male characters are either really annoying or greedy, so you hardly care when they die in over the top fashion.
I didn’t particularly enjoy this at the cinema and it wasn’t that great when I watched it again but it does have some redeeming features.
Some of the deaths are quite clever but there are far too many of them, look at the bodycount in ‘Halloween H20’ hardly any deaths but it was scary and full of atmosphere, something that is lacking here.
I really respect the job done by the team behind Jason X as the film is aesthetically pleasing, has some great moments of comedy, and they tried to do something different. Compared to other space movies it didn’t fail completely.
By far the best aspect of this movie however was the virtual reality scene where Jason takes on two naughty teen girls in their sleeping bags, an obvious homage to one of the favourite death scenes in the series.
OVERALL SUMMARY
The film isn’t terrible but I enjoy the earlier sequels where the action takes place in the creepy woods of Camp Crystal Lake and the surrounding areas.
