Like many horror fans, I grew tired of waiting to see the remake of this movie, so checked out the original instead, and I may be in a minority here, but I think the remake might be better.
The story sees a group of teens investigate the links between a website that promises the chance to see ghosts, and a rash of recent suicides.
The film starts out ominously enough with a guy hanging himself whilst his friend waits for him in the other room, and that’s when things kick off for the group.
The film then takes its time building relationships and slowly revealing the master plan, but takes so long in doing do that the story looses steam and ends up being boring, as you desperately wait for it to get to the point.
Metaphors aside, on a purely horror level, the film doesn’t deliver the goods here as it comes across as a weaker version of Ringu 2, what with all the death/technology gubbins.
OVERALL SUMMARY
A great idea for a film. The filmmaker clearly has much to say about life, death and loneliness, but he perhaps should have saved it for a drama instead. A well made film, but it’s not horror. This mis-marketing left me disappointed, as I had been anticipating another spooky J-horror.
