‘Scary Spice’, Mel B stars in this horror movie about animal rights activists trapped in an abandoned research centre, and whilst it showed a lot of promise its only merits are technical ones.
The film looks great. It is well lit, has good use of camera and nice production design, but the story itself is really boring.
Starting out quite well, the film sees an operation to set animals free from a research centre go terribly wrong when one of the members is left behind.
A year later the group reform thanks to a coded message on their website to save the member they had left behind.
The film then spends way too long trying to convey the changes that they have all gone through and how they no longer have anything in common except a guilt complex, before sending the cast underground for an hour to walk about and talk about yoga and karma.
The cast who are all familiar did good with the material and I noticed that Mel B has been working on her accent and speech..she actually pronounces words like a British librarian here.
This second effort from the guys behind ‘Octane’ hasn’t been that well received and it’s a shame as the film actually has quite an original premise. Where it falters is in it’s terrible story. You don’t care for any of the characters or their cause, and it ultimately ends up boring you with it’s overlong dramatics and dull conclusion.
OVERALL SUMMARY
A nice idea and a technically sound film is let down by a boring story. I hope that the next film from these guys will do well as they have had two good ideas for movies, that have simply failed to capture the audiences imagination.
