This fifth film in the series sees the evil Leprechaun terrorise a gang of wannabe rappers when they steal his gold to pawn in order to buy new music equipment.
If I’m being completely honest I didn’t have high hopes for this but I was in need of some light relief and the price tag of three quid (or one if you’re lucky enough to find a DVD copy in Poundland) saw me snap it up without hesitation. I’m glad I did as it was pretty funny.
Watching the film I have to say it made perfect sense to place Lep in the Hood as he’s well known for his wicked rhymes, and he gets a chance to rap in this entry.
The film is similar in tone to the other entries I’ve seen over the years and the Leprechaun was disgustingly funny as usual.
The gags are good and there’s a little bit of gore to be found too, although it was evident that budget restrictions prevented the filmmakers from creating too many on screen deaths, so it had a tendency to fade to black too often.
Although a lot of the characters are stereotypical, I enjoyed meeting the crazy bunch including a gun toting Reverend and a cross dressing diva named Ms. Fontaine. You can tell that the characters worked well because of the fun each actor had playing their respective role.
OVERALL SUMMARY
A fun little genre effort which I personally thought was more fun than ‘Bones’. It probably wouldn’t be half as good without Warwick Davis in the titular role, but then again any film that features death by fro comb deserves a bit of praise in my book.
