I had never heard of this film until it hit DVD and Blu-ray in the UK this week, but I’m glad I noticed it, as it was the best slasher movie I’d seen since the 90s heyday.
The plot is simple, a deformed boy who witnessed his mother’s death by an angry mob after she sacrificed a new-born baby to give her son life returns from the dead and kills anyone who sets foot on his property.
Casual horror fans will read my review and think I’ve lost my mind by raving about this film but as a lifelong slasher fan it was bloody awesome!
Essentially recycling plot points and scenes from every notable genre entry which came before it, Mask Maker has a cool killer (Jonathan Breck a.k.a The Creeper from Jeepers Creepers), a couple of prophets (The Hills Have Eyes star Michael Berryman and Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood’s Terry Kiser), and a villainous forefather (Deep Rising’s Treat Williams), not to mention a pointless cameo from Jason London (The Rage: Carrie 2). The main cast are all good and play likeable characters and Nikki DeLoach makes one hell of a Scream Queen.
OVERALL SUMMARY
It’s everything The Cabin in the Woods ripped the piss out of but it’s quick paced, action packed, made me jump, has great effects work and lots of T and A…what more could you want from a slasher movie?
