This low budget slasher movie begins well enough with a cool little opening credits sequence, and continues on the right path for most of its run time.
The film sees a group of friends head to Memorial Lake for a weekend getaway for the first time in a number of years since one of the group’s brother was killed.
The young and unknown cast do decent enough jobs at developing their relationships before the killing starts and when it does it’s in dramatically gory fashion. One girl is forced to crawl over razor blades as the killer slashes at her with a chisel pre-heated by a blowtorch, and that’s just one example of the many gory set pieces.
With the deaths coming thick and fast, you may wonder why I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth. Well, the movie begins to lose it towards the end as the characters are dispatched all too easily and in rapid fire succession until we get to the motive and the movie falls apart thanks to an overly long, dull and drawn out twisty turny ineffective explanation as to why all those kids had to die.
Memorial Day Killer manages to look a little more up market compared to some of the slasher tosh currently on shelves in Blockbuster, but its insistence to try and outdo itself and set itself apart from the very genre it is part of makes it fall flat on it’s face at the final hurdle.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Fans of low budget slasher movies will enjoy this, but they too shall be sadly disappointed at its weak ending.
