The hat trick in this weeks bunch of new releases has to be this dark
psychological horror / thriller that stars the excellent Carly Pope as
Sara Novak, a Philosophy student who loves to spend her spare time solving
puzzles with her comic book store owner friend Vern.
It soon becomes apparent that Sara has been playing a game and now she and
Vern are being encouraged (seperately) to play a dangerous game with
potentially fatal consequences.
I really enjoyed this film, which comes to us courtesy of the wonderful
Lions Gate Films.
The Director creates a stylishly eerie yet realistic world for his
characters to work in keeping the audience engaged through voyeuristic
enigma.
The cast are excellent (it’s a shame about Ian McShane’s dodgy accent
though) and really help to propel the story forward, especially Brendan
Fehr who makes the most of his intriguing supporting part.
The story is wonderfully written and beautifully acted and the ending is
greatly ambiguous.The only points that prevent me from giving it a higher
rating are the lack of closure and the underuse of certain characters and
elements.
OVERALL SUMMARY
A great film that hopefully won’t go unoticed.
