Another film about creepy goings on at a secluded boarding school albeit a glossy looking one, ends up being a borefest despite it’s best efforts.
When a group of teens get into a wreck after being attacked by a plague of locusts, they awaken to find that they have been taken to the infirmary at the Marquez academy.
Francis, a character who screams I’m an evil plotting bitch (subtlety is not this woman’s best asset) puts on her best I’m a nice lady face, and tempts the kids to hang around with a cooked breakfast and some horny minions.
Meanwhile, the usual boring man on a mission to uncover the truth so that his deceased niece can rest in peace, heads to town to discover just exactly who is one of them, and indeed what being one of them means.
The cast are likeable enough I guess, and the film looks good, but the digital effects are awful and so is the tired and dull plot. There’s nothing wrong with rehashing and old story as long as you make it different in your execution of the material, something which director Ralph Portillo doesn’t achieve here. Of course it is a complete miracle that he was even allowed the chance to direct again after being responsible for the abomination that was ‘Bloody Murder’.
I was truly bored by this film and hope that people will stop trying to do the ‘weird religious fanatics take over a school/town/band’ sub genre as it reeks.
OVERALL SUMMARY
If you haven’t seen this and are dying to see something new you could give it a rent but only if it is a last resort. Having said that I would probably rather be bored. In all, One of Them truly is one of them, and for that reason gets one star!
