    Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)

By Ian Martin on January 13, 2011 Reviews

The action packed Resident Evil series returns to the big screen in Resident Evil: Afterlife. Afterlife follows Alice (Jovovich) as she continues her quest to track down any remaining survivors of the zombie apocalypse caused by the omnipotent Umbrella Corporation. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the hordes of undead takes Alice and her fellow survivors to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by the zombie infestation, and on top of this Alice is about to step into a deadly trap. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights as she comes to blows with the head of the corporation, Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts).

Franchise veteran Paul WS Anderson is back at the helm for this sequel, which offers a lot more of the undead-killing entertainment fans have come to expect. Anderson delivers a stylish looking picture with an environment that feels as cool and slick as the characters inhabiting it. Boasting impressive production design the film is bound to please franchise fans, but may not be to the taste of newcomers. If you’ve enjoyed the journey so far, then you’re in for a real treat as you get exactly what the series does best – an entertaining blend of stylish action and gore.

By this point only aficionados will be keeping up with the series plot developments involving Raccoon City, the Umbrella Corporation, and the T-Virus; the rest of us will have to accept or reject this sequel as an exercise in excess. Resident Evil: Afterlife ultimately delivers what fans of the series crave: plenty of unrivalled zombie-killing action. The film holds a few surprises for fans (be sure to stay for a little something extra after the end credits), and promises that an even bigger sequel is in store.

    OVERALL SUMMARY
True to series form, plot is nearly indiscernible, but this fourth instalment in the franchise created by writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson is the most stylish so far. Fans of the franchise will be pleased than one of the game’s most iconic characters, Chris Redfield, has finally been introduced.
