Crispin Glover takes on a dual role in this trippy little horror film and whilst it’s way out there, it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
The story features a group of friends on vacation at a lake who encounter the legend of demented twins Simon/Stanley. It doesn’t take long before they meet the duo themselves.
Simon Says has a good cast and it’s a family affair with most of the Lively family appearing as well as Glover’s father Bruce. Our main protagonists or college kids if you will are familiar faces and do good jobs, especially Greg Cipes, the funny voiced actor who has appeared in a few horror films already as well as shows such as Ghost Whisperer. Cipes has previously appeared in Club Dread and that particular film is very similar in tone to this one.
The death sequences and FX work are to a high standard and although they are obviously backed up with some low end CGI, the effects are passable. So credit goes to the production team for wringing so much value for money out of the budget and putting it back on screen. For a low budget horror effort, the film looks really good, if not a little Scooby Doo set design wise in places.
OVERALL SUMMARY
The film is genuinely funny and extremely gory and Glover works well with the young cast to ensure that Simon Says is the best horror comedy I’ve seen since the criminally underrated and aforementioned Club Dread.
