This remake of the Swedish film Midsommer sees a group of friends head out to a country house in Louisiana to celebrate the titular holiday. One of the group Megan is still haunted by the unexplained suicide of her twin sister Sophie, six months earlier. As the group tries to relax and enjoy the weekend, Megan begins seeing things she can’t explain. Is Sophie haunting her?
This film is a slow burning chiller which is quite similar to The Uninvited in many ways. It’s glossy with a great cast and does have a nice little mystery at its core, but it’s not really scary or gripping enough to be outstanding.
The locations and cinematography are gorgeous, yet eerily creepy and Dan Myrick (of Blair Witch Project fame) handles the proceedings well.
Elisabeth Harnois really carries the film, as the rest of the cast aren’t given that much to do. Amanda Seyfried is criminally wasted here, as are the rest of the young cast. R. Lee Ermey pops up and does a good job. He’s well cast here, as the audience will expect one thing from him but gets another.
OVERALL SUMMARY
In the end, Solstice is a nice little supernatural thriller with nice scenery, imagery and enough intrigue to keep you watching. I wouldn’t rush out and buy it, but it’s definitely worth a rental.
