Steve Sessions returns with his latest effort and the man just keeps getting better and better.
Jeff Dylan Graham stars as Frank, a paranormal investigator who is struggling to cope after an accident during one of his investigations. His book has flopped, he has turned to drink, and one of his friends is in a coma. As a last resort, he accepts a job investigating the ghostly goings on at an old plantation house, but what he discovers is more terrifying than he had expected.
Sessions always manages to assemble a great cast for his works and this is no exception. Sure there are off moments from some of the actors but they are all credible, no easy task when you consider the subject matter.
This is definitely Sessions biggest film to date in terms of locations, and aesthetic, but it isn’t necessarily his best in terms of story.
Every aspect of the project is solid except the story, which despite being enjoyable is quite predictable, although he does manage to keep things fresh and surprising until the final frame.
Definitely a big improvement over his last in terms of the look as this is a much grander affair but it lacks the indie sensibilities which made his earlier films so much fun.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Great work from everyone involved leads to a really good watch for a lonely winter’s afternoon or a bleak mid-winter’s night.
