Well, having seen this now, I can safely say that The Descent had nothing to worry about. This repetitive borefest sees a number of familiar faces trapped a mile below the surface in a system of caves which are inhabited by CGI/Rubber beasties. The usual shenanigans ensue as the cast list dwindles.
I can’t really tell you any more about the plot because I included it in full in the paragraph above. The cast switch between climbing and diving as they are picked off one by one by the prehistoric looking beasties, but there are never really any highlights.
There are a few nice visual touches and the sets are a sight to behold, but it’s all been done countless times before.
The fast pace of the camera work and the editing makes it impossible to see what’s happening in an A v P way, and it just leaves you bored with a sore head.
The ending (like the rest of the story) is utterly predictable, and despite the obligatory open ending I doubt we will be seeing a sequel any time soon unless it’s a straight to DVD release.
OVERALL SUMMARY
There is no attempt to create atmosphere here nor is there any suspense or scares. I guess that’s what happens when you give a 3rd Unit Director from The Matrix series the chance to direct a feature. He makes it glossy and it’s got plenty action and explosions but that’s about all it’s got going for it.
