I have to say I expected far more of this fourth crow film, which sadly turned out to be the weakest in the series in my humble opinion.
Edward Furlong plays Jimmy Cuervo (bad casting) an ex-con who is in love with the local minister’s beautiful daughter Lily (Emmanuelle Chriqui). On the night that Cuervo’s parole ends the two young lovers decide to elope, but things go awry when escaped prisoner and Satanist, Luc Crash (David Boreanaz) escapes with the help of his gang (who represent the four horsemen of the apocalypse) and his bride to be Lola Byrne (Tara Reid). The gang murder Lily and Jimmy and Jimmy finds himself resurrected as The Crow, a mythical being who returns from the dead to take his revenge over those who killed him and his one true love.
The film starts out well enough and has a decent enough story and cast to make this watchable, but it doesn’t really go anywhere or add anything special to the series. The majority of the cast sail through it without any effort, except Boreanaz who manages to demonstrate once again that he is both a fine and capable actor.
From a physical point of view, Edward Furlong didn’t sit well with me for this role from the moment I heard he had been cast. The Crow in my eyes should be tall dark and mysterious. Even one of the characters remarks how ridiculous he looks in a suit, as he looks like a little boy in his dad’s clothes. Furlong opts to play the character as someone who really can’t be arsed hanging around and this is very off putting. I can’t understand what happened as Furlong is more than capable and I guess one could even say tortured, (which the character is) so I cannot fathom how he was so wide of the mark.
OVERALL SUMMARY
The film moves too slowly, no-one really pays for their sins and the use of flashback is overused, making this quite a boring movie. I assumed that even the most ardent Crow fans would have been bored by this movie but it’s actually getting mainly positive reviews.
