It’s ‘The Burning’ meets ‘The In Crowd’ as a group of country club teens are terrorised by a badly burnt handyman during the summer season, but it was somewhat disappointing.
I had waited for years to see this movie and it finally made it to UK shores minus a letter (It’s known here as The Green Keeper) and despite decent cover art and a slick trailer, the film turned out to be a very unfunny comedy with a dash of horror for good measure.
Like the similarly flash but dull ‘Adam & Evil’, the film saw the characters fart about for forty minutes before anyone died, and then turned into an all out slashathon in the final half hour or so.
The plot was tired and poorly executed, and in one scene I didn’t even know what the killer was doing to one character as they hadn’t properly established the surroundings.
The film was aesthetically pleasing and they did a lot of great work with lighting and so on, which meant that there were actually a few good jump scenes and the deaths were quite gory, but the film ended up like a piss-poor parody of the far superior ‘Club Dread’.
The cast were mostly newcomers with the exception of Ron Lester, but then again after losing over 300 pounds and being shamefully underused, you probably won’t notice him either.
OVERALL SUMMARY
The Greenskeeper had lots of potential and has the odd moment or two that stood out but it was too much of a farce to be taken seriously. It didn’t work as a zany comedy/horror but it may well have worked as an old fashioned 80’s slasher movie.
