This retitled Italian slasher film looked so cheap that I had avoided it
for ages and had forgotten it existed. However, out of boredom late one
night I decided to check it out and what a surprise!! Who would’ve thought
that a lame Italian B-movie would provide some of the best frights I’ve
had in a while.
When friends take a boat trip to a remote island to visit a friend’s
family, they are shocked to discover upon arrival that the island is
deserted. Where are all of the boats? And more importantly where have
all of the islanders gone?
Once again this film has been dubbed badly (although I doubt anything will
ever top the bad dubbing of ‘Flashback’) and suffers from piss poor
picture quality but nonetheless manages to conjour up an atmosphere of
dread and real jolting moments of terror.
The cast including Tisa (sister of Mia) Farrow are all up to the job
though appear to be slightly older than the usual group of characters in
horror films.
The film is disgustingly gory despite the fact that it is heavily edited
(it origionally featured the killer eating an unborn foetus and his own
guts!!!) but nevertheless, Director Joe D’Amato uses enough nice scenic
shots and different angles to give the viewer some pleasurable aesthetics
in contrast.
Whilst the revelation of the killer is dealt with in an unconventional
way, it does work in it’s own B-movie way.
OVERALL SUMMARY
An okay way to spend minutes if you can overlook the bad dubbing and
picture quality, this for the second time lately (see ‘Gacy’ review) made
me jump a few times.
