Director Scott Phillips has proved with the release of this film that there are indeed still fresh ideas out there amongst the myriad of remakes, reduxes and re-imaginings. Like a sort of low rent Tarantino he has managed to create a unique vision from years of zombie watching, without allowing any of his subconscious thoughts to overpower his originality.
The film which begs the question ‘How do you lead an alternative lifestyle when everyone else is dead?’ sees Nathan and Dexy struggle to maintain their open marriage after a zombie plague leaves the majority of the population dead or I guess living dead.
Despite it’s gross and gory sensibilities, there is an underlying sweetness present that deals with love, jealousy and lust, yet it never gets in the way of the action.
The film is certainly gory thanks to some cool zombie make-up and a lot of blood and slime, and it also manages to be laugh out loud funny. Oh and it even has zombie shit complete with teeth and hair!!
Scott Phillips may have a twisted sense of humour but it translates well to film, as you find yourself enjoying the kind of thing that would normally make you question a persons sanity.
The cast who are all amateurs do a fine job with Kurly Tlapoyawa giving a fine performance as a bad ass zombie killer, ably supported by Ross Kelly and Kristin (niece of Gunnar ‘Leatherface’ Hansen) Hansen shows more than a passing resemblance to her uncle in terms of her mannerisms.
OVERALL SUMMARY
If you’re looking for originality, a twisted love story, humour, guts n’ gore, you could do worse than to rent this as it demonstrates once again that the talented filmmakers are being neglected in favour of the easy money option. Hell, never mind renting it…get out there and buy it. It’s absolutely chock full of hilarious extras and fans of zombie movies will most certainly enjoy it. It’s at least ten times better than ‘Children of the Living Dead’ and don’t even mention the abomination that is the 30th Anniversary edition of ‘Night of the Living Dead’.
