    The Stuff (1985)

That’s not snow you’re eating Harry.

How the hell do you make a movie about killer yogurt and make it as AWESOME as this. Sure The Blob was damn good.. But, this is homicidal ice cream we’re talking about here. And done right. Won’t be done again, and hasn’t been done since.

The movie starts out with some fellas, Harry included, just happen across some Stuff bubbling out of the ground in the snow. And the story starts from there. For some strange reason they decide that its a good idea to taste it and start marketing it for sale. That’s about it for the back story. We will never know where it comes from, how it got there, and what it is really. But, this is a horror movie made in 1985. They did things different then. Didn’t matter about the whys and what’s.

Fast forward a cut scene and we see FSI (Full Stuff Integration). Yeah made that up myself. Its everywhere. Stores, billboards, in your fridge. And they even got some half dressed women dancing around with it on commercial. Must be good right?

Now we got Jason (Scott Bloom) who happens to be Brian Bloom’s brother, who plays his brother in this movie too. Mo’ Rutherford (Michael Moriarty), Nicole (Andrea Marcovicci) who started off working to promote The Stuff, now trying to stop its spread. And ‘Chocolate Chip’ Charlie Hobbs (Garrett Morris). They all know something is up, and all their paths will cross to find out what this Stuff is all about.

Jason witnesses The Stuff coming alive in his refrigerator and is set on trying to save his stubborn family and anyone else. But, they have different ideas for him.. Mom, Dad, and bro are already under its control. Mo, on the other hand is in it for the money. He is hired by competitors to find out what he can about The Stuff so they can market their own product or ‘perfect it’. Charlie is in fact one of the competitors that wants to find out what the hell is going on with everyone’s addiction to The Stuff and why nobody is buying anything else. And what they find out that its not just your everyday yogurt. Everyone that tastes it gets addicted and puts The Stuff before everything else. No room for anything else in your fridge my friend. Its Stuff or nothing at all. And when you’re addicted, then you basically become a Stuff puppet. This delicatessen likes to eat away at the insides until you’re just a shell. So it makes it easy to take out someone stuffed with Stuff. But, there might be more of them than there are of you. It thinks, it moves, and its smart. Its goal seems to be just taking over every living thing and keep the secret safe and uses it host to do so whatever way it can.

Larry Cohen was a genius coming up with this movie. Its one of those flicks that you probably watched late night on USA or Sci Fi many years ago at 2am. Or watched for the first time when you where around the age of 10 like when I did. How can you not remember the catchy commercials they made to market it. Can’t get enough of The Stuff.. The Stuff, the taste that makes you hungry for more. And of course.. Are you eating it, or is it eating you.

    OVERALL SUMMARY
This movie would never fly now a days. A paper thin plot and very very little with character development. For a movie in 1985 the special effects where pretty damn good. Wanna see someone dislocate their jaw and open it wide enough to fit a head in it? Over all the movie is FUN. Look past its flaws that we would find now a days in our recent films. And enjoy it for what it is. A horror food show. Its one of those movies that you have to see at least once. That way you’ve seen something to tell your friends about. ‘Hey, have you seen The Stuff.. You know the movie about maniacal whip cream.’ Watch it late at night with a 6 pack of beer and some pizza. Or maybe with some…. ice cream. Check it out, its good Stuff.
