This follows on the heels of ‘My Little Eye’ and ‘Halloween: Resurrection’ proving that reality TV is still going strong and that it now has it’s own horror sub genre.
Seven students agree to move into an old house to take part in a trial for a new student website, but amid creepy goings on they uncover the house’s secret past, this unwittingly lands them in danger as a killer sets about bumping them off.
Whilst the film will more than likely be viewed as a cheap cash-in on a whole host of similar horror movies which weren’t that good themselves, TheCampusHouse.com has a lot going for it.
Opening with a strong theme tune by Vincent Gillioz, the film boasts good performances from a largely unknown cast and has a really cool killer. Whilst there hasn’t been a good killer mask in the genre for a while now, this one is actually quite creepy.
The film was not without it’s flaws however and by far the most puzzling aspect is the underuse of the main cast. Back in the day, fans loved to root for their favourite characters and were shocked and saddened when they died (I remember people gasping with shock when Randy met his demise in Scream 2) the main cast are relatively safe here as secondary characters are introduced only to be killed off, as the kids set about bickering and sleuthing. Whilst this ties in with the killer’s motive, it could have been worked out a little better in the scripting stages.
OVERALL SUMMARY
TheCampusHouse.com is a well made and enjoyable little slasher film. The cast are likeable and the killer looks great but it is a little slow in places and you are never truly concerned for the main protagonists, as they appear to be relatively safe throughout. Whilst this sub genre has yet to produce a truly amazing film, you will have fun with this if you give it a chance and it is very well made compared to a lot of films out there at the moment.
