    Voodoo (1995)

By Ryan McDonald on January 10, 2004 Reviews

A decent horror pic starring a post-Goonies, post-Blown Away, post-career Corey Feldman might sound like one of the signs of the Apocalypse, but
    here it is.

Corey (Would you girls stop screaming, please!) plays a recently
transferred student who refuses to pledge to the local jock fraternity,
instead hanging out with a bunch of nutters led by Joel J. Edwards.
Feldman’s girlfriend Diana Nadeau doesn’t seem all that happy that her
boyfriend now attends the same college, but she’s even less thrilled about
Corey joining this new fraternity. There’s just something not quite right
about these people… (I’m being vague, but it’s one of those films you
just don’t want spoiled) Look out for Sarah Douglas from ‘Superman’ and
‘Eraserhead’ star Jack Nance in a crucial supporting role.

The film does not fare well to close scrutiny (So Corey doesn’t want to suffer a jock initiation of eating animal parts, but he’s not opposed to
hazing as a whole? And just WHY was Nadeau so underwhelmed by her
boyfriend’s surprise arrival?) but for 90 minutes or so, it entertained
me. It’s also rather moody, the film has an interestingly sombre tone. It
also does a great job of casting suspicion on anyone, I’m sure everyone
can guess what the film is about (duh…read the title) but just who is in
    on things?

Also helpful is some of the casting; Douglas is thoroughly wasted as a lecturer, but her very inclusion in the cast already conjures up an air of
distrust. Towering over all, though, is Nance in a decidedly Dennis Hopper
meets Brad Dourif part. He absolutely goes to town here as a constantly
and incoherently babbling weirdo who keeps popping up and surely has at
least some connection to things. The music score by Keith Bilderbeck is
    cheap, weird, but effective.

One Final Note: The film may be hard to find and indeed hard for some to watch as it features a school shoot-out scene.

    OVERALL SUMMARY
If you can get your hands on this straight-to-video flick, you might be
pleasantly surprised. Unambitious but well-done on a low-budget and quite
    entertaining.
