This straight to DVD sequel was highly disappointing for me, as it pissed all over fond memories of the first film by breaking away from the atmosphere present in the original and successfully ruining two returning characters in the process.
Wrong Turn 2 follows a group of disparate characters who are all brought together in the wilderness as they take part in a reality TV show called Ultimate Survivor. The group are split into pairs and made to endure tasks but inevitably fall foul of the cannibals living in the woods and all kinds of bloody splatter ensue.
Credit must go to Joe Lynch for not just turning in a re-hash of the first, as he really has set out to do something new which in the backwoods/reality TV slasher sub-genres is no easy feat, but he has mistakenly assumed that his sense of warped gory humour is what all horror fans want to see. I applaud him for having the guts (pun intended) to put his work unapologetically out there, and for the most part it has paid off (I think I’m the only person out there who didn’t like the film that much).
I loved the cast and thought they did well in their roles and the look of the film was great too. Another disappointment was the shoddy effects work. I really did not like the look of the mutants here, but the gore gags were well handled and well executed. A huge plus was the excellent score by Bear McCreary.
OVERALL SUMMARY
In the end I think this may have the potential to grow on me, but I was extremely psyched for this and unfortunately, it did not deliver. I personally hated the tone of the film.
