It is about time that we had a new cool superhero. I am getting tired waiting for the new Superman incarnation to surface, and the first Blade film did not give me much hope that this sequel would be worth waiting for.
This is however a surprisingly good, fun superhero film. The plot is based around some very convoluted reasoning that leads Blade to work with a gang of vampires to help destroy a new breed of vampire who are a threat to both vampires and humans.
The director, Guillermo Del Toro is a master craftsman and it is due to his vision and skill that this film is an above average horror flick. His first film, the Spanish vampire movie ”Chronos’ has given Del Toro previous experience in this genre, but his first film is yet to be surpassed in its unique and compelling story and style.
Del Toro uses his expertise to grow the character of Blade and turn him into a kick ass cool superhero. The first film was a missed opportunity that cleverly made Snipes look very old and tired – Not sure that’s what a superhero should be personally.
Del Toro does such a great job that he even makes Luke Goss seem cool (he plays the villain) – admittedly he is hidden under 5 inches of make-up.
OVERALL SUMMARY
‘Blade 2’ is a superior gore/vampire film which breathes new life into this character and sets up the possibility for this series to run and run.
