After the death of their father, Derek and his little brother Tobey move to their Mom’s home town to live with their Grandma. When Tobey ventures down a shortcut after school one day, he discovers a mutilated dog. This prompts eldest brother Derek and his friends to investigate the decade’s long mystery as to why you should avoid the shortcut.
I can tell you right now why you should avoid the shortcut. The film is too long, poorly paced and not that interesting.
The first (and probably last) film from Scary Madison (an off shoot of Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production company, set up specifically to make horror movies), has a great cast and shows some promise initially, but suffers from a weak script.
The score by Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars composer Michael Suby is surprisingly non-descript, the effects and characterisations are poor and the whole affair plods along back and forth between two timelines until we finally discover the secret. The one thing the film got right for me was a double bluff which seemed obvious at first but paid off right at the end.
OVERALL SUMMARY
I was looking forward to this and I’m not going to lie…I was really disappointed.
