    Club Dread (2004)

By Phil Davies Brown on July 2, 2004 Reviews

I didn’t have high hopes for this as it was considered a flop earlier this year in the States, and had received bad reviews by just about everyone, not to mention that the previous effort from the filmmakers ‘Super Troopers’ was hugely disappointing.

Going in expecting a silly romp, I have to say that the film really surprised me and I really enjoyed it.

There’s a killer on the loose at an island resort headed by washed up singer Coconut Pete (Bill Paxton) but this killer is only interested in killing the staff. In a well shot mix of laughs and jumps, the dwindling staff must put aside their differences and try to figure out the identity of the killer.

Maybe it’s just because it’s summer or maybe it’s because I’ve been trying to chill out lately, but this film really delivered on the horror side.

I think that most people disliked this because they expected it to be more like Scary Movie, but thankfully it is way more subtle than that and has tonnes of boobs and bloodshed to keep hardcore horror fans happy.

The plot and majority of the dialogue is awful, but the film really has some creepy moments and good deaths.

Whilst watching this I realised that this was probably the closest thing I have actually seen to an 80’s horror film since the 80’s and for that reason I respect the guys of Broken Lizzard for getting some of the hottest young actresses in Hollywood to show us their boobs and for delivering some solid gore effects, whilst managing to take the piss out of the genre in a subtle manner.

Don’t get me wrong it’s all silly fluff but it’s great. Everyone concerned has helped to bring back the elements of the genre killed off by the late 90’s slasher boom, and it’s about bloody time.

    OVERALL SUMMARY
Club Dread is an excellent way to kick start your Summer vacation. This is seriously underated stuff here, and ends up being the movie that ‘Scary Movie’ should have been.
