    Argento Likes Hitchcock(?)

    ARGENTO LIKES HITCHCOCK(?)

Dario Argento has a little less than two weeks before he wraps his latest effort Ti Piace Hitchcock?, or, Do You Like Hitchcock? Currently lensing in Turin, Hitchcock is a RAI Trade production being eyed for television (let’s not forget DVD) and is apparently the first of eight films that Argento will oversee.

Budgeted at just a little over two million, the first installment, helmed and cowritten by Argento (Franco Ferinni and Robert Booth also contributed), is a giallo that centers around a film student who’s preparing to be tested on the works of Alfred Hitchock. Murder and mystery ensue employing many of the themes and cinematic tricks Hitchcock and Argento lovers have come to be familiar with.

Dark Dreams has posted a set visit penned by Argento enthusiast and journalist Alan Jones. There he dishes on the cast details and provides a few quotes from Dario regarding his post-Il Cartaio (The Card Player) film experience. ‘HITCHCOCK is set in [Turin] because it’s a homage not just to early cinema and Alfred Hitchcock but German expressionism, Robert Weine and THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, F.W. Murnau and NOSFERATU, THE GOLEM, Fritz Lang of course, Russian movies during the Stalin era, Peter Lorre etc,’ Argento tells Jones in his visit. ‘TWO EVIL EYES was my tribute to Edgar Allan Poe and now it’s Hitchcock’s turn. This film is my valentine to all the movies, directors and stars I’ve loved throughout the years.’

Also, Jones dropped in on the Creature Corner to give them an update on a piece they previously posted regarding his new book Profondo Argento. They stated that Argento would join Jones at this year’s FrightFest to launch the book. ‘That was indeed the original plan but the moment he started his new RAI TV movie TI PIACE HITCHCOCK?/DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK? in late July, I knew the writing was on the wall concerning his personal appearance. It was just going to be too difficult for him to arrange. But I’ve just returned from the Turin location of that movie and while I was there I got Dario to sign 300 labels for the book so the fisrt people who buy it will get an autographed copy.’
