    Blessed (2004)

By Phil Davies Brown on April 6, 2005 Reviews

I know what you’re thinking……not another ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ clone, how many of these bloody things do we have to see? The good news is that Blessed was surprisingly enjoyable.

Now I don’t really like Heather ‘I’d much rather pretend to make love than pretend to die’ Graham as she made some awful remarks about her time spent on the set of ‘Scream 2’ (and was also allegedly a bit ‘difficult’ during production of this movie) however, she was quite likeable here.

The plot sees loved up couple Sam and Craig Hawthorne (Graham and James Purefoy) attempt to get pregnant using IVF, only to find that the creepy locals have impregnated Sam with the Devil’s DNA….or have they?

What I liked about the film, and I believe made it stand out, was the fact that the movie dealt with the strange occurences during the pregnancy and not with creepy children, like every other spawn of Satan flick before it.

The film is beautiful to look at, and has a lot going on visually such as a clinical and isolated feel, and good use of light and shadow to represent the obligatory good vs. evil angle.

The cast are all very good with Fionnula Flanagan almost making me piss myself in a scene where she makes fun of a very camp receptionist.

The CG is also well handled for a DTV film and it was nice to see Andy Serkis in a small yet pivotal role.

For all you guys who love true life tales of creepy goings on surrounding horror movies, David Hemmings very sadly dropped dead of a heart attack during the making of this movie.

    OVERALL SUMMARY
We’ve seen it all before, but this film was actually quite enjoyable and is worth a rent if you’re looking for something new.
