This well shot Spanish film was left on the shelf over at Dimension for 3 years before it saw the light of day, and whilst it wasn’t the most astounding piece of work I have ever seen, it was a decent film that tried out a couple of new things.
Anna Paquin stars as Regina, a young girl who must uncover the secret history of her family’s new home in order to protect her younger brother from becoming the latest victim of an ancient ritual.
The film looks wonderful with good use of dark and earthen tones, and the cast are likeable despite their characters being a little grating from time to time.
The film is not exactly frightening (probably thanks to the scissor happy Weinsteins) but it is mildly creepy and kept my interest throughout.
What I liked most about the film was it’s ability to draw you into it’s trap by appearing to be utterly predictable whilst managing to provide a mild twist right before it’s clever little ending.
OVERALL SUMMARY
If you missed this at the cinema during it’s limited release I wouldn’t be too upset about it…we waited three years to see it so a few more months won’t make that much difference. Anyone in search of something new to watch on a rainy day will probably find this a decent rent once it’s released.
