This slasher movie manages to be somewhat original despite ripping every notable movie out there.
A group of students are invited to a remote mountain cabin for a weekend break as a thank you for helping their professor with some research. The kids do the usual horror things (drinking, shagging, walking in the woods alone) before they are picked off one by one at a rather alarming rate. It’s up to a select few to stay one step ahead of the killer and discover why they’re being killed and by whom.
This film really surprised me actually. It looks good, has an attractive cast, a good score, decent atmosphere and a phenomenally high body count, which is achieved in little to no time at all. When half the cast were bumped off in the first 15 minutes, I thought this was perhaps actually a short film, but there were soon more teens pulling up in mini buses and a rather lengthy twist ending to pad out the running time.
Urban Legend is a main source of inspiration here, as is Saw (one need only look at the cover art to make that connection) but despite relying heavily on its genre peers, the film was an enjoyable and somewhat different type of slasher film.
OVERALL SUMMARY
I have been very pleasantly surprised by most of the straight to DVD horror movies this Halloween and this film is another treat worth checking out on the 31st.
