The third and probably not final chapter in the DeCoteau legacy sees teens
do battle with demons.
As the first and second films were re-treads of ‘The Craft’ and ‘The Lost
Boys’ I wondered what had inspired this third part, until I heard
‘Dungeons & Dragons’ referenced and then it became clear.
For once the location and premise were new!! The Mexican estate so
frequently featured in David DeCoteau films was substituted for a Canadian
High School complete with snow and everything!! The premise sees some
teens invite the school jock to play ‘The Game’ with them, where the
players sneak into the school at night and role play to win prizes.
However this time something isn’t right as the players are being possessed
by a scary man in an executioner style costume.
None of the actors at time of production had been featured in a DeCoteau
film, which was refreshing and some of them were actually very good!!
Especially the character of Stan.
Sadly, in keeping with the look of the previous films, DeCoteau resorted
to using that damn lightning machine!!
DeCoteau showcased a great location and some good lighting, it was just a
shame that he didn’t develop further sources of light, and he used far too
much slow motion (perhaps he was making up for the surprising lack of
homoeroticism and soft porn absent from this part of the trilogy).
OVERALL SUMMARY
In the end, the trilogy (for now) ended with a refreshing entry but don’t
expect any dramatic ‘Scream’ inspired revelations as the films are related
in title and idea only. As David DeCoteau goes from strength to strength
I look forward to further ventures.
