    The Halfway House (2004)

By Phil Davies Brown on June 26, 2004 Reviews

In an exclusive first look, I got to check out this, the first film from genre great Kenneth J. Hall’s new company BV Entertainment.

The film tells the story of Larissa Morgan a young woman in search of her sister, who goes undercover with the help of a policeman in The Mary Magdalen Halfway House for troubled girls.

Once inside, Larissa has to deal with some nasty bitches, a creepy handyman, a pervy priest and the ever watchful sister Cecelia….not to mention the thing in the basement!!

Writer / Director Kenneth J. Hall clearly knows and understands his target audience, and it shows. The film not only has some of the raciest sex scenes I have ever seen in the genre, it also has well handled gore effects and a whole host of clever references to some classic genre films.

If it sounds like it couldn’t get any better, the film is also expertly shot. What a relief to see a low budget horror film made by someone who knows how to light a shot and indeed isn’t afraid to use light to enhance the look of the production.

Cult star Mary Woronov is excellent here as the less than holy sister Cecelia and she plays well against ‘House on Haunted Hill’s Janet Tracy Keijser.

The film is full of a sense of fun that hasn’t been seen in the genre for a long time, and hopefully this is a sign of things to come from the company.

The only downside to the proceedings is the predictability which is encountered as it nears it’s climax. It gets a tad silly but then it is all in the name of fun so it doesn’t hamper the proceedings too much.

    OVERALL SUMMARY
The Halfway House is without a doubt one of the funniest low budget horror films I have seen in ages. This has the potential to be a cult hit if handled by the correct distribution company.
