Jamie Blanks followed up the excellent ‘Urban Legend’ with this 20
something slasher and whilst it did quite well at the box office, I feel
it was sadly under appreciated.
Moving on from teen slasher to ‘Sex and the City’ slasher was an easy
transition for the more than capable Blanks,and it shows.
Starting off by referencing ‘Carrie’ and ‘Prom Night’ we are quickly made to feel sorry for the killer.
The film may have been a little spoiled for choice at first by having
three opening sequences in quick succession, before getting into the main
storyline, but it is nevertheless fun to watch.
The very beautiful cast are quickly stalked and slashed in rapid
succession and in even more inventive ways than in Blanks previous foray
into horror postmodernism.
Once again, Blanks excells in the chase sequences and very successfully builds tension with the help of the wonderful score by Don Davis.
Credit must also be given to Blanks for managing to throw us off the trail of the killer, despite the fact that a press release detailed who had been
cast to play the killer.
OVERALL SUMMARY
A fun movie that actually has guts and heart, ‘Valentine’ is the perfect
way to celebrate, come February the 14th.
