This movie was actually pretty good. In fact I would go so far as to say it’s one of the better straight to DVD releases that I’ve seen this year.
The premise sees five girls sent to a convent school for penance when their families can no longer cope with their problem behaviour. In actual fact, each of the girls has a special gift such as telekinesis and power of healing, which the parents were afraid of. The girls butt heads at first but soon connect, and have to help each other cope with not only lashings of physical and mental abuse from the bitchy headmistress, but 2000 evil spirits as well.
The cast were all great here and the film looked beautiful. It was really well lit and complimented the set design in a big way. The story and style of the film, whilst nothing new, still managed to be somewhat refreshing, but it’s the sexiness and sassiness of our leading ladies that makes the film most appealing. Forget your slutty, sleazy B-movies; this film knows how to be provocative without showing too much.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Five girls looks like a Craft clone on first approach, but it’s actually a pretty well written, well acted, expertly made, solid little teen horror movie, with a witty script and some cool effects work going on. I would recommend this to fans of The Craft and The Lost Boys.
