    Bait (2012)

“Cut” director Kimble Rendall gave Aussie horror another stab with this tale of a disparate group of strangers stranded in an underground shopping mall with a great white shark after a freak tsunami – and it’s a lot of fun.

Way back in 2000 I was psyched for Cut, which was hailed as the Aussie version of Scream. Sadly, it failed to live up to the hype, eventually going DTV here. The same sense of fun is abundant in this film, (which was no doubt inspired by the similar Shark Night 3D) but there’s a much better cast at its core (including The Loved Ones’ Xavier Samuel, You’re Next’s Sharni Vinson, The Vampire Diaries’ Phoebe Tonkin and Alex Russell from the upcoming Carrie remake) so I wanted to root for the characters (mainly because most of them were in Home and Away when I was a student, so they already felt like old friends).

There are some well executed set-pieces, the shark looks great and the film doesn’t outstay its welcome. In all it’s a fun popcorn movie for fans of creature features.

    OVERALL SUMMARY
Whilst this didn’t do huge business in Australia it was so successful overseas that a sequel is in the works. I for one would welcome it with open arms.
