I wasn’t expecting much from this low rent slasher flick (what can I say, I’ve been let down too many times before) but I actually really enjoyed it thanks to its fun 80s slasher vibe.
The plot concerns the legend of Mary Hatchet (which is also the film’s sub-title), a young girl who went crazy and killed her parents before being institutionalised. Years later a guard raped her and nine months after that during a bad labour, the doctors told her that her baby was still born which prompted her to go on another rampage. This leads us to the present day as a group of students head to a house party to celebrate the titular event only to fall afoul of the ghost of Mary Hatchet, or is she still alive?
Considering its low budget, the production values are great and the editing and effects work is highly creative. Genre legends Bill Moseley and Danielle Harris put in appearances which also help to elevate the film to another level.
OVERALL SUMMARY
It’s clichéd from start to finish and you can guess who the killer is right away, but it’s obvious that the film was made by fans of the genre for fans of the genre, so I for one really enjoyed it. Taken for what it is, slasher fans should have fun with this.
