Australia’s answer to ‘Scream’ was hugely successful in it’s native
country as well as France and Hong Kong which ultimately led to it’s
distribution worldwide.
Following a huge pre-release buzz, I was anxious to check this one out but
it sank without trace before eventually appearing in my video store in
January of .
The main aspect that had me in a tether was the fact that the one and only
Kylie Minogue (with THE hot bot) who was in the middle of a career
resurgence, was in a slasher film.
I remember one of the publicity posters on the net had Kylie cowering in a
corner, looking terrified with the tagline ‘It’s hard to scream without a
tongue’. This was great marketing, and then I saw the film and was
shocked to discover that she died within five minutes of appearing
OFF-SCREEN!! (I feel cheated)
Already in a strop about Ms. Minogue’s short-comings, I was furthermore
pissed off to learn that the film was utter crap!
Ok, so some of the cast are quite good, but the dialogue they are forced
to spout is just lame. The language used is in fact worse than the cheese
Molly Ringwald’s character has to say in the opening ‘s slasher
segment!!
In the end the only good things about the film are Molly Ringwald’s character’s bitchy comments, the Scarman mask and the death scenes.
Australian films all seem to suffer from the same grainy depressing colour
quality and this is no exception, (I’ve seen sewers better photographed)
which is a shame as this showed a lot of promise. But it shows that
marketing is an art form in it’s own right.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Alright, but there is far better to see out there. Some of the cast and
the Director show a lot of promise, but just need to find the right
project.
